A nonimmigrant is a noncitizen who seeks temporary entry to the US for a specific purpose (or who is temporarily present in the US pursuant to such entry). The noncitizen must qualify for the nonimmigrant classification sought. As a nonimmigrant, the nonimmigrant is generally restricted to engaging in activity that is consistent with the noncitizen’s particular kind of nonimmigrant status. Generally, a nonimmigrant must have a permanent residence outside of the US.
